TYPES OF ANIMATION

Below are some of the types of animation :

1. Classical/Traditional animation (Cell/Drawn Animation)

animators draw images on a transparent piece of paper fitted on a peg using a colored pencil, one frame at the time. Animators usually test animations with very rough drawings to see how many frames they would need for the action to work

2. 2D animation

2D animation focuses on creating characters, storyboards, and backgrounds in two-dimensional environments

3. 3D animation

Animating objects that appear in a three-dimensional space. They can be rotated and moved like real objects.

4. Motion graphics

Motion graphics are pieces of digital footage or animation which create the illusion of motion or rotation, and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects.

5. Cut Out Animation

Cut-out animation involves producing animations using 2-D characters, props and scenes cut from materials, such as paper, card or fabric. Animators divide characters into smaller segments, piece together the individual cut-out shapes and move them in small steps, taking a picture -- with a film camera capable of taking single pictures -- at each step, to create the illusion of movement.

6. Stop motion animation

Stop Motion Animation is a technique used in animation to bring static objects to life on screen. This is done by moving the object in increments while filming a frame per increment. When all the frames are played in sequence it shows movement. Clay figures, puppets and miniatures are often used in stop motion animation as they can be handled and repositioned easily.

ANIMATION PRODUCTION

Meanwhile, below are some briefs about ANIMATION PRODUCTION

These are the basic steps for an animation production :

1. Story
2. Write (Script)
3. Storyboard
4. Animate (sound & voices)
5. Modelling (3D & 2D)
6. Rigging
7. Pre-visualization
8. Animation
9. Lighting and rendering
10. Editing and colour (colour correcting)
11. Sound Design

SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE FOR ANIMATION, A BRIEF ABOUT ANIMATION PRODUCTION

Assalamualaikum and a good day! Moving on to the next chapter which is about Software and Hardware for animation production.

Animation : PC
Video : Usually Mac
*But now, Mac is more popular for both

Hardware : (at least two screens)
- more functions
- digitizing tablet
- Wacom tablet (preferrably A4 size)

Some of familiar softwares are as below :

Adobe Animate

  •  Anime Studio
  • Antics 2-D Animation
  • IAd Producer
  • Autodesk Animator
  • DigiCel FlipBook
  • Express Animator
  • Flipnote Studio
  • Flipnote Studio 3D
  • Gryphon Software
  • Morph
  • Mediator (software)
  • ParticleIllusion
  • RETAS
  • Stykz
  • SWiSH Max
  • TISFAT
  • *Toon Boom Harmony
  • Toufee
  • TVPaint
The software we are going for this subject is Toon Boom Harmony, considering our level of skill and knowledge, Toon Boom Harmony would be suffice enough (2D Animation)

Week 1 : Introduction to Animation

Assalamualaikum and good day everyone! I am very sorry for the delay as i misunderstood what Dr. Jamalludin said during our first lecture session. Thought we were given specific link or templates. Turned out it's based on our preferences on how to assemble our blog entries. So here I am, taking MPP1393. It's something new but animation related materials always excite my eyes so why don't i explore more, right?

Our first session was held on 18th September 2018, with four people's attendance. Dr. J had explained and briefed us about the course information which we will go through this semester. Below are some short notes taken from the lecture.

What is animation?

A simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or frames.

 BASIC CONCEPTS OF ANIMATION
  • Keyframe
    • Main frame
  • Twinning
  • Onion Skinning

    • to ease animators to work with layers
  • Frame by Frame
    • cell animation
    • frame by frame + tweening (smooth product)
  • Frame Rate
    • measurement of the frequencey
    • usual fps (12-15 fps)
GROUP ACTIVITY
IMPORTANT NOTES!
  • FRAME BY FRAME ANIMATION
    • creates illusion of movement
    • changes content of the stage in every frame
    • image changes in every frame instead of simply moving across the stage
    • increases file size more rapidly than tweened animation
KEYFRAME

TWEENING
*Two Types : Motion and Shape Tweening

SELF-REFLECTION

Based on that day's lecture, we were exposed with basic information and brief information which i found very important for a beginner level animator like me.  There are more and more terms and practical exercises to be done.  Toon Boom Harmony will be used as the software for us to produce our animation later on.  The above terms are very basic terms that an animator must know and empower before proceeding to the next stage.
